Concert I (November 14, 2004) - Conversations for the 'Third Stream' with
Gunther Schuller, guest composer and conductor, and Maria Jette, soprano
The CMSM will open the season with Gunther Schuller, one of the most important musical personalities of our time. The main feature of the program will be Mr. Schuller's "Conversations for Jazz Quartet and String Quartet", conducted by Mr. Schuller himself. It is a representative work of the " Third Stream", a term Mr. Schuller coined to describe music which combines the forces of classical and jazz genres. Also featured will be Mr. Schuller's song cycle "Six Early Songs"with Soprano Maria Jette, Joseph Haydn's " Scottish Songs" and Paul Hindemith's Minimax will round out the program. |
Concert II (January 8, 2005) - "Witness the Birth of New Young String Quartet, "Five Points' "
The CMSM introduces the newly formed string quartet " Five Points" comprised of four top young musicians currently based in New York. It promises to be a wonderfully auspicious occasion. The members are Ariana Kim, violin, Mark Kosower, cello,Eric Nowlin, viola, Harumi Rhodes, violin, and will presents quartets by Haydn, Brahms and Alberto Ginastera. This will be the CMSM's annual free community concert in partnership with St Augustana Lutheran Church in West St. Paul. |
| Concert III (February 20, 2005) - " An evening of Piano Chamber Music with Evelyne Brancart"
A renowned Belgian pianist Evelyne Brancart returns for an evening of piano chamber music including Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet in E flat Major, which the CMSM artists: Young-Nam Kim, violin, Sally Chisholm,viola and Anthony Ross,cello recorded with Brancart on the CMSM' s first CD. Also on the program are Samuel Barber's Cello Sonata and Aaron Copland's Piano Quartet, one of Copland's most serious works. |
Concert IV (May 8, 2005) - " Celebrate Mother's Day Jazziclassically with Joe Lovano and a World Premiere"
Conversations for the "Third Stream" continues with big time jazz saxophonist, Joe Lovano, on Mother's Day evening. A new "Trio for Violin, Jazz Saxophone and bass", written by MIT composer Peter Child, especially for CMSM Artistic Director, Young-Nam Kim and Joe Lovano ,will receive its world premiere. Also on the program will be works by George Gershwin, and "Celebrating Sinatra", Frank Sinatra songs arranged for Mr. Lovano for string quintet, woodwinds,piano and percussion.
Also on the program will be "Sextet for Two Horns and Strings in E flat major" by Ludwig van Beethoven. |
All concerts are Sunday evenings at 7:00 pm at the Minnesota History Center, 345 Kellogg Blvd. in St. Paul, with the exception of Concert II, which will be a Saturday matinee on January 8, 2005 at 3:00 pm at Augustana Lutheran Church 1400 S. Robert St. in West St. Paul.
In addition the CMSM will present four Noontime Concerts in the Great Hall in St. Paul's Lowertown on, (12/7, 2/8, 3/29, and 5/3) and a series of Master Classes in partnership with Schubert Club and MacPhail Center.
Season tickets are $70 for general admission,$55 for seniors, and $40 for students.
