Written to the texts of poems by Aleksander Kulisiewicz, an inmate at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp near Berlin, Camp Songs were commissioned by Seattle-based Music of Remembrance to commemmorate the Holocaust. "Our Society is honored to be presenting the Minnesota premiere of these Camp Songs. They are part of our ongoing effort, begun with Hún Qiáo [Bridge of Souls] two years ago, to remember and heal horrific tragedies through the arts," said Young-Nam Kim, artistic director of the Society. Cellist Fred Sherry is a long-time colleague of both Kim and Schoenfield. He has appeared with our Society both at our subscription concerts and on tour. A pioneer and a visionary, he has introduced audiences on five continents to the music of our time through his close association with eminent composers such as Babbitt, Berio, and Carter. In addition to Camp Songs, he will present the local solo cello premieres of Wuorinen's Cello Variation III, and Carter's Figment I and Figment II, the last one written especially for him.
