VIOLINIST JOSEPH SILVERSTEIN OPENS THE CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY OF MINNESOTA'S 11th SEASON, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6

Internationally acclaimed conductor and violinist Joseph Silverstein opens the 2002-03 season of The Chamber Music Society of Minnesota 4 p.m., Sunday, October 6, at the Ted Mann Concert Hall at the University of Minnesota. Tickets, priced at $20 for general admission and $15 for seniors, can be ordered by calling the Society office at (651) 450-0527.

To celebrate opening of the 11th season and Silverstein's third Society concert appearance, a special group rate of $8 is available to music students for this concert. To qualify for this special offer, students should call the Society office and provide their affiliation to a group, arts organization, music school or teacher.

The Society's Artistic Director Young-Nam Kim said he has had a long association with Silverstein and eagerly awaits his return to the Twin Cities for this concert. "Ever since my student days at Tanglewood in the 1960s Joseph Silverstein has been both a mentor and a friend to me.  It is always a privilege to perform with him."

Founded in 1992, the Society's mission is to enrich life through the beauty of chamber music. Under Kim's leadership, the Society has enjoyed ten years of successful performances, commissions, premieres and community outreach. Society concerts feature a resident group of nationally recognized musicians joined by world-renowned guest artists. The Society is grateful to the McKnight and Sewell Foundations for ongoing support.

Joseph Silverstein (violin)

Internationally acclaimed conductor and violinist Joseph Silverstein began his remarkable career as a young soloist, winning the Walter Naumberg Award and the Queen Elizabeth Competition. He joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1955 and was appointed concertmaster in 1961. During his distinguished tenure at the Boston Symphony Mr. Silverstein was wildely recognized as the world's greatest concertmaster. After being appointed assistant conductor of the BSO in 1971, Mr. Silverstein held both positions unil he was named Music Director of the Utah Symphony in 1983. As a conductor and soloist Mr. Silverstein has appeared with more than 100 orchestras worldwide and was the founder-director of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players which toured throughout the U.S. and abroad. He has served on the faculties of many important institutions, was the chairman of the faculty of Tanglewood Music Center and has been a fellow of the prestigious American Academuy of Arts and Sciences. Mr. Silverstein maintains arguaby the largest repertoire of any performing artist today as a conductor, soloist, concertmaster and chamber musician. His extensive discography appears on RCA, Deutsche Grammophone, New World, CBS, Telarc and Pro Arte among others.
